About

First off, he prefers Steve to Stephen. Now that that’s out of the way…

Steve was born in 1960 and raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He’s never had a book on the New York Times Best Seller List, never won a Hugo or Nebula, and never had a Publishers Weekly starred review. He DID receive the Tolkien Society’s Imperishable Flame Award, but that was for an album he wrote and produced, not a book.

In other words, he has zero accolades or credentials as an author! Nary a one! We’re starting from scratch here. Skallagrim – Into The Breach is his first novel, after all.

But you’ve come this far; please read on.

The Glory & The Grind

“As a rock-n-roll bass player, Steve Babb is flawless; as a poet / storyteller he is excellent. He ranks along with names like Stephen Lawhead or Jeffrey Overstreet. ” Grandfather Rock, WCWP New York

Steve is best known as the bassist and co-songwriter for the prog-rock group Glass Hammer. He’s been a professional musician for most of his life, starting at the age of twelve as a church pianist. Since then, he has traveled the US and a handful of other countries in various bands, notably the aforementioned Glass Hammer. Though Glass Hammer has received critical acclaim for their twenty studio albums, headlined major festivals, and have become one of the most respected bands of the progressive rock genre, the early years of Steve’s career were, shall we say, a mix of the glory and the grind. He spent nearly half of the ’80s on the road with different metal, alternative, and pop groups. Though there were high points, he also saw the very worst that road life could offer. It was a lonely and often dangerous way of life.

He spent nearly half of the ’80s on the road with different metal, alternative, and pop groups. Though there were high points, he also saw the very worst that road life could offer. It was a lonely and often dangerous way of life. By 1990 he had the good sense to marry the right girl, come home, settle down and start a business.

Since then, he has busied himself in the production of numerous albums for songwriters, the recording of audiobooks for Harper-Collins, and in the day-to-day tasks required to operate a recording studio while maintaining the persona of ‘prog-rock star’ and ‘prolific songwriter and lyricist.’ This last bit, he enjoys to the fullest.

He’ll not give up the music anytime soon; it’s a huge part of who he is. But Steve has determined to fulfill a longtime dream, to put pen to paper and write the tale of Skallagrim. Stephen makes his home in Chattanooga, Tennessee, with his wife Julie and son Jon-Michael.
